Dyno Chart

Project GD STI, Improving the Powerband with Precision Turbo and Injector Dynamics Project GD STI, Improving the Powerband with Precision Turbo and Injector Dynamics

Previously, MotoIQ had dyno tested and tuned their Project STI at Church Automotive Testing. Although their car made an impressive 501whp and 487lb/ft of torque, their power peaked at 6,000 rpm and fell off very rapidly after 6,500 rpm. The torque peaked at 4,800 rpm and dropped significantly afterwards. Given that their engine is built to rev as high as 9,000 rpm, and their headwork and camshafts are optimized for 7,500-8,000 rpm, the turbo was identified as the limiting factor. They mentioned that their Precision Turbo drop-in replacement is performing excellently, producing more power than its rated capacity. However, they aimed for a wider power band and more peak power to leverage their built engine's capabilities. According to their data, air intake temperatures began to soar just as the power output decreased. This indicated that they were pushing the compressor beyond its efficient operating range. They didn't want to transition to a rotated mount turbo for additional power. Their preference was for something similar to an OEM appearance under the hood, and they wanted to avoid a thermal management project to maintain the car's track drivability with a rotated mount system. Fortunately, Precision offered a larger turbo with the same footprint as their previous one, rated at 630 hp – roughly 100 hp more than their earlier turbo. The rapid decline in torque and power is evident in the dyno chart. They weren't chasing a substantial power increase; their goal was to extend the power band without a sharp torque drop-off. It's evident that their engine produces less power at the top end with 25 lbs of boost compared to 17 psi. This is another indication of the turbo compressor's inefficiency and tendency to operate outside its optimal range.
