GR WRX / STI / LGT (2008+)
The 2008+ Subaru GR WRX and STI carry over the trademark Subaru turbocharged, all-wheel drive powertrain layout as their predecessors. The WRX and the fourth-generation Legacy 2.5GT also benefit from a turbocharged 2.5-liter EJ engine, closing the horsepower gap with the STI as performance contenders. The EJ series Boxer engines that propel these chassis offer streetable increases in output with bolt-on turbochargers from MHI, Garrett, BorgWarner and Precision Turbo. 2.5-Liter Boxer Brothers
The Subaru GR WRX and STI represented the next generation of Impreza, following in the footsteps of the widely popular GD WRX and STI. Subaru took a big step forward by equipping the GR WRX with the Legacy 2.5GT’s 2.5-liter EJ255 engine producing 265 horsepower, bridging the gap to just 35 horsepower less than the EJ257-powered WRX STI. Of course, the STI does benefit from a wider stance, aluminum suspension components, a more robust transmission and differential, and the Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD) that had set the STI apart from the standard WRX all along. Nonetheless, the WRX presented a more affordable solution for someone unable to justify the cost of the STI.
4 or 5 Doors – STI Your Way
For those investing in the STI, Subaru only offered a 5-door wagon in 2008. Later, a 4-door sedan came to market for the 2011 model year. The STI continued to carry the banner as Subaru’s flagship machine, boasting a superior drivetrain and aluminum suspension components. The EJ257 also benefited from more than a decade of aftermarket development, enjoying broad support from a variety of parts manufacturers. This continued to make the EJ257 the mill of choice for making more horsepower.
A Legacy of Performance
In 2005, Subaru offered its Legacy 2.5GT sedan with the EJ255 engine, making it a competent performer relative to the flagship STI. As the top trim package available for the Legacy, the 2.5GT did not disappoint, combining luxury appointments with turbocharged thrills. This Legacy boasted a much stiffer chassis compared to its predecessors, lending to handling and power delivery to the wheels. With aftermarket support for the EJ255 and a broad selection of turbocharger upgrades available, the Legacy enjoyed the same tuning flexibility as its rally-bred brethren.
