Nissan’s turbocharged SR20DET engine was produced from 1989-to-2002 in JDM, EDM and Australian markets. Fortunately for the USDM market, the longitudinally-mounted SR20DET drops right into the 1989-1998 Nissan 240SX, providing turn-key performance gains.
All SR20DET engine features a square bore and stroke of 86mm x 86mm. The early generation of SR20DET engines in the 180SX and S13 Silvia, often referred to as a "Red Top", "Black Top" and "Flat Top", came equipped with the first-generation cylinder head known as a “High Port Head”. Nissan equipped these early SR20DET engines with journal bearing GT25 turbochargers in the 180SX and S13 Silvia.
Later generation SR20DET engines that propelled the S14 and S15 Silvias featured a “Notch Top” or “Slant Top” valve cover. This engine’s cylinder head, referred to as a “Low Port Head”, offers variable camshaft timing on the intake cam. The distinctive “notch” at the front of the head offers clearance for the intake camshaft’s variable timing gear. A journal bearing GT28 turbocharger came with the S14 Silvia while a ball bearing GT28R turbocharger boosted the S15 Silvia.
