Golden Anniversary Roadster
Honda celebrated its 50th Anniversary with the release of the AP1 S2000 roadster in 1999. This homage to the company’s front engine, rear wheel drive S500, S600 and S800 roadsters of the 1960s maintained the same naming convention, alluding to the F20C1 engine’s 2,000cc displacement. But Honda did more than just drop in a 237 horsepower VTEC engine with a 6-speed transmission and a Torsen LSD at the rear. They engineered a rigid and balanced chassis with double wishbone suspension and a 50/50 weight distribution for neutral handling. The S2000 soon gained notoriety for its handling prowess. With VTEC, 237 horsepower and a 9,000 RPM redline, the S2000 proved a fun, fast and spirited car to drive.

Bigger Brother AP2
In 2004, Honda refreshed its roadster with the AP2 S2000. The AP2 enjoyed a host of changes, including a new 2.2-liter F22C1 engine. While this mill featured a longer stroke and 160cc additional displacement, peak horsepower figures remained about the same but with a reduced redline compared to the F20C1. However, the longer stroke of the F22C1 improved drivability thanks to torque increases on the order of 4-to10 percent between 1,000-8,000 RPM. Larger wheels, a retuned suspension, carbon fiber synchronizers in the transmission and aesthetic enhancements further set the AP2 apart from its older sibling.

Hunting For More Horsepower
It did not take long before the aftermarket began to uncover the S2000’s strengths and weaknesses. Performance enthusiasts sought faster, quicker times, which required increased horsepower. The capable F20C1 and F22C1 engines were soon equipped with forced induction solutions from a variety of sources. The peak power junkies looked to turbochargers for their fix, with built examples ranging from 700 to over 1,200 horsepower.
