The European “hot hatch” segment has been a hotly contested battleground that has led to the release of performance platforms with broad appeal. Ford has been a fierce competitor in the hot hatch segment since it released the Escort RS Cosworth in the 1990s. The RS pedigree continued with the release of the Euro-spec Focus RS in 2002. The second-generation Focus RS came to the market with a turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine. This too, was a Euro-spec configuration that America would not have the pleasure of driving.
Focus RS for America
At long last, with the release of the third-generation Focus, the North American market finally got its wish. Ford released its 2016 Focus RS with a turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine putting down 350 horsepower and 350 lb-ft torque through an all-wheel driveline. This technological powerhouse also incorporates the usual traction control implements in addition to electronically controlled driveline and suspension. With four driveline modes including “Track” and “Drift”, the Focus RS raises the bar in the hot hatch segment and its finally available in the USA.
