Ford Fusion EcoBoost 2.0L SEMA 2013

Background:

In 2010 Full-Race worked with Ford and BorgWarner engineers to prototype 3.5L and 2.0L aftermarket engine boosting solutions.  After the overwhelming success we had at SEMA 2012 with our project ‘F-150 Freak-O-Boost’ and it’s legendary 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine – we duplicated the effort for 2013 with Ford’s flagship 4-cylinder engine, the 2.0L EcoBoost. The sloping windsheild and sleek roof gives the car a four-door coupe’ look.  High strength steel A and B-pillars maintain a rigid and stiff unibody structure.  Wind tunnel testing puts drag coefficient at a slippery 0.28, the flat-bottom underneath the car doesn’t hurt either.

2013+ Ford Fusion / Mondeo

The completely new 2013+ Ford Fusion (North America) is the same as 2013+ Ford Mondeo (Europe, Asia, Australia) and a key part of the “One-Ford” global plan to sell best-in-class vehicles around the world.  This effort required starting from a clean slate and Fusion/Mondeo is the first of many upcoming vehicles based on Ford’s new CD3 chassis.

The fast roofline gives the car a four-door coupe’ look.  Fusion’s roofline blends with high-strength-steel A-pillars and B-pillars to maintain rigidity and stiffness throughout the unibody.  Wind tunnel testing puts drag coefficient at a slippery 0.28, thanks in part to the curvy front and raked windshield with a flat-bottom underneath the car.

Exterior design chief Chris Hamilton said: “We put a lot of emphasis to create something that we think will be different in the marketplace..  We wanted to create a beautiful-looking car, that’s always been our number one objective.. From a design point of view, we weren’t necessarily thinking about just Camry, Accord, Malibu, those sorts of things. We were thinking about all the global inputs. We were taking into account inputs from outside the segment as well, from BMW and Mercedes. The hardest cars to do are these cars. They have to be everything to all people. They have to be great to look at, they have to be great to drive, and they have to be functional”.

Ford’s development teams in Europe and the US worked together and succeeded in making Fusion a good looking and spacious sedan that eats up winding canyon roads. It’s responsive and predictable handling feels and drives like a nimble “small” car with quick turn-in and resistant to body roll.  Factors contributing to these excellent vehicle dynamics are a stiff chassis, multilink rear independent suspension (with spherical bearings) and refined Electric-Power-Assist-Steering (EPAS).

6-speed Paddle Shifted Automatic Transmission:

Unique to this 2.0 engine is a six-speed 6F35 paddle shifted automatic transmission with Sport mode.  The Titanium Fusion adds the option of All-Wheel-Drive.  Interesting note: the Fusion and the Subaru Legacy are the only cars in the class to offer AWD
