What is Ecoboost?
ECOBOOST EXPLAINED - V8 POWER FROM A V6
When it comes to modern engine technology that combines power, efficiency, and sustainability, Ford's EcoBoost stands tall. But what is EcoBoost, and why has it garnered so much attention? In this article we'll take a deep dive into Ford's revolutionary turbocharged engine technology.
EcoBoost is Ford's line of turbocharged, direct-injection gasoline engines. Designed to match the power of larger engines, it impressively achieves about 20% better fuel efficiency and emits 15% fewer greenhouse gases. The secret sauce? A blend of turbocharging, direct fuel injection, and variable valve timing – all working in harmony to give drivers an exhilarating performance without the guilt of excessive fuel consumption. The ECO in EcoBoost is this exceptional fuel economy.
ECOBOOST THROUGH THE YEARS
The EcoBoost lineup has seen numerous engines tailored for different vehicle sizes and needs:
1.0-liter 3-cylinder EcoBoost: Found in the Ford Fiesta (2013–2019), Ford Focus (2015–2018), and Ford EcoSport (2018–2022).
1.5-liter 4-cylinder EcoBoost: Powers models like the Ford Escape (2014–2022) and Ford Fusion (2014–2020).
2.0-liter 4-cylinder EcoBoost: Featured in the Ford Edge, Ford Escape, and Ford Focus ST, to name a few.
2.3-liter 4-cylinder EcoBoost: Propelling vehicles like the Ford Mustang, Ranger, and the new Bronco.
2.7-liter, 3.0-liter and 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost Engines: These powerhouses, ranging from 2.7-liters to the high output 3.5-liters, can be found in vehicles like the Ford F-150, Transit, Expedition, and the awe-inspiring Ford GT.
FORD'S 2011 3.5L ECOBOOST TORTURE TEST
One of the most significant tests of EcoBoost's durability and resilience came in 2011 when Ford decided to put its 3.5L EcoBoost engine through a grueling "torture test". This wasn't just any test; it was designed to challenge the engine beyond normal boundaries and prove its worth.
The Test in Detail:
Dyno Testing: The testing began with a simulation of 150,000 miles of tough usage, equivalent to about 10 years of severe service, on a dynamometer – a machine used to test engines outside of the vehicle. The EcoBoost came out of this intense session unscathed.
Oregon Logging: After the dyno, the same engine was dropped into a 2011 Ford F-150, which was then driven to Oregon's steep logging trails. Loaded with logs weighing 55,000 pounds, this F-150 managed the rough and muddy paths effortlessly.
NASCAR Testing: Following the logging test, the truck was driven 3300 miles to Miami's Homestead Speedway where the maximum towing load was attached in the form of two NASCAR stock cars loaded on a trailer. This test involved circling the speedway at full throttle for 24 hours straight, only stopping for refueling.
Baja 1000: As if all this wasn't enough, Ford then subjected the same 3.5L EcoBoost engine to the brutal Baja 1000 off-road motorsport race. Surviving over 1,000 miles of harsh desert, rocky terrains, and extreme temperatures, the engine performed brilliantly.
The Results
After the series of challenges, Ford disassembled the engine in front of the media and auto enthusiasts, examining it for wear and damage. Astonishingly, the parts were in exceptional condition, proving the durability and reliability of the 3.5L EcoBoost engine. This torture test was more than just a demonstration; it was a statement by Ford on the robustness of the EcoBoost technology.
